Flying Competitions
Flying Competitions
The CCAC Flying Competitions are
held on the 2nd Sunday of each month, commencing around 11am. All
pilots and students (at any level) are most welcome, there is an
instructor on board at all times.
Entry fee is $50, and a BBQ lunch
is provided.
The competitions are an excellent
opportunity to keep current and to also safely hone and test your
flying skills in many aspects including:
• Forced Landings
• Engine, Equipment& Instrument Failures
• Blind Circuits
• Short & soft field takeoffs
• Instrument Navigation, and
• Spot Landings
Flying competitions enhance your skills and make you a better
pilot. It's interesting to note that some of the better performers
in our comps are students as they are often more current than some
of our senior licensed pilots. Even if you don't wish to compete,
come and enjoy the BBQ and watch the goings on!
November Competition
We gathered on the 13th November for the final competition of
the year. James was inducted for his
first exposure as our air judge. Lovely conditions for flying but
a little choppy at low level.
This month's procedures were:
- Soft field take off and climb as directed to 1500' whereupon
45 degree left and right turns were executed. This was followed
by a glide approach to a spot landing abeam the clubhouse.
- Touch and go, into right hand 1000' circuit with a flapless
spot landing.
- Low level 500' left hand circuit to a spot landing, flaps
and speed at pilot's discretion.
- Safety and airmanship influenced the air judge’s scoring.
Spot landing points were 20, 10, 5 with zero points for landing
short (crashed and burned).
Sounds easy? Well flying from the right seat, with points subtracted
for out-of-balance make it a little more attention seeking. You
need to consider parallax when looking at the Turn and Bank indicator
from the right seat.
Most pilots handled the flying with a reasonable
degree of skill, but the points were in the spot landings. Quite
a few pilots were not quite coordinated with throttle and control
wheel at the critical landing phase and ended up landing short –
right seat flying requires a bit of practise. Only one pilot (the
winner) scored on all three landings.
